Title: Qualified information transmission against structured psychological treatment of adolescents with generalized social phobia

Author: Olivares, J; Rosa-Alcazar, AI; Olivares-Olivares, PJ
Abstract: We present the results of a controled trial conducted in the community context, with Spanish adolescents, who have generalized social phobia. The aim is to provide empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of qualified and specific information transmission on general anxiety and social anxiety compared with the structured and systematic psychological treatment. The 59 subjects (67.9% women and 32.1% males), aged between 14 and 17 years, were randomly assigned to three experimental conditions: formal psychological treatment, qualified information transmission and waiting list control group. The results show that adolescents who received structured psychological treatment reach better results in measures of anxiety and social avoidance, in the correlates of these (assertiveness, self-esteem, social skills and adaptation) and in clinical performance indicators compared with who only received qualified information transmission or no treatment. It also notes the efficacy of information transmission on improving self-esteem.
