Title: Assessing social unassertiveness in children: situative aspects and levels of processing
Author: Saile, H; Kison, K
Abstract: Social unassertiveness of children is specified on the 11 cognitive level as deficient expectancies of control and competencies, on the emotional level as sense of helplessness and resignation, and on the behavioral level as passive and avoidant behavior. These three levels of processing are studied for three situations, dealing with (a) getting one's own way, (b) contacting peers, and (c) own opinion. The resulting questionnaire is able to assess social unassertiveness at three levels of processing and for three situations with 69 items in a concrete manner suitable for children. A further scale on social anxiety with 12 items deals with fearful anticipations and physiological reactions when facing situations where negative evaluation and rejection is anticipated, Subjects were 487 children of grade level four to six with a mean age of 11.6 years. Test statistics for items and scales of die questionnaire are judged as good. Using a two-factorial analysis of variance the three situative aspects, the three levels of processing, and their interaction were shown to be significant factors determining the answers of the children.
