Abstract: Using a one-group pre-post-test design (N=8) we investigated the effectiveness of a newly developed three-day training course on personal initiative for the unemployed. Pre- and post-test mean comparisons show a significant increase in subjective personal initiative and generalized self-efficacy, and significant decreases in irritation, strain, psychosomatic symptoms, and (marginally significant) depression. The participants showed a higher degree of behavioral assertiveness after the training course but there was no change in behavioral exercises within an unfamiliar situation and overcoming barriers. Peer and transfer interviews after 4 weeks also confirmed the success of this new type of training.
