Title: Validation of an inventory of sex roles constructed in Chile
Author: Almagia, EB
Abstract: This study was designed to estimate the reliability (both temporal stability and internal consistency) and construct validity of the Masculine (M) and Feminine (F) scales of the Sex Role Inventory (IRS) developed in Chile. Participants were 390 students, 179 males and 211 females, 15 to 39 years old. Individuals completed the IRS and measures of Communication Social Skills, Emotional Empathy, Assertiveness, Achievement and Affiliation. Test-retest correlations, with a one-year interval, were 0.70 for M and 0.72 for F. Cronbach's Alphas were 0.82 for M and 0.84 for F. Both scales were found to be empirically independent. Significant gender differences were observed on both scales and most of the predictions about the diverse relationship of M and F with other measures were verified, providing considerable support for the construct validity of the IRS.
